CHILDREN'S lives are being put at risk by "killer toys" in food products, according to Euro MP Gary Titley.

He warned parents to be "on the guard" against the toys, which often appear buried deep in chocolate eggs and other packaged foodstuffs aimed at children.

Mr Titley was speaking after Euro chiefs last week refused calls to take urgent action to combat the dangers.

"The Brussels bureaucracy is guilty of breathtaking complacency," he said. "I know of three UK families whose children died after choking on small toys in foods.

"Many more have suffered serious injuries in similar incidents. The products are already banned in the USA yet the Commission refuses to act."

Mr Titley pledged that Labour MEPs planned to continue lobbying the Brussels bureaucracy day after day until it woke up to the full extent of the problem.

"I am confident that, eventually, we shall be able to persuade the Commission to see sense. In the meantime, I urge all parents of young children in the North West to be on their guard."
