BROTHERS Paul and Steve Clough wanted to do their bit to fight cancer after their mother lost her battle against the illness earlier this year.

So they volunteered to take part in the Great North Run to raise money for Marie Curie nurses.

Paul (32), who works as a supervisor at Bury Interchange, said: "We just wanted to do something for cancer. It didn't matter what it was for, whether it was for fund-raising or research, we just wanted to do something."

The brothers are now busy training for the run on October 22 when they will be pounding the streets all the way from Gateshead to South Shields.

"I am trying to run about seven and a half miles, three times a week," said Paul. "Steve keeps fit by playing rugby union for North Manchester."

The brothers will also be running the London Marathon next year to aid organisations that fight cancer.

The care that Marie Curie nurses give to patients and their families is free of charge and Jane Morris, area fund-raiser for Marie Curie said the brothers' efforts were very welcome as 50 per cent of their work was financed through fund-raising. "We pride ourselves on providing a unique nursing service. Patients are nursed in the comfort of their own home and also offer support to their families."

Anybody who has already registered for the Great North Run is welcome to join Marie Curie's team of runners. Those interested should call 0161 480 3002.
