AN argon plasma coagulator may sound like something from Star Trek but for patients at Burnley General Hospital it is a vital piece of equipment.
The machine cost £17,000 and is only the second to be installed in hospitals in Lancashire.
The League of Voluntary Workers raised the money through their shops, sales of work and fund-raising events.
Secretary Margery Gilbert said: "This is a new device which is used to treat tumours and polypuses where an operation is not possible. It is used every day at the outpatients clinic for the gastroenterology department."
It is the second major donation by the league this week.
The workers will soon be visiting the wards selling tickets for their Christmas raffle which usually raises about £500 to £600.
At Christmas every patient is given a present, usually chocolates, and every child in hospital is given a toy.
