ALMOST 125 years of worship will come to an end on Sunday when the final service is held at Colne Salvation Army.

Salvation Army leaders said the decision to close the Market Place citadel was part of a wider re-organisation to help make the most of the Army's limited resources.

The Nelson Salvation Army corps will take over responsibility for the organisation's work in Nelson and Colne under commanding officers Captains Michael and Jenny Barwise.

The region's divisional commander Major Chick Yuill said: "It is with regret that we have to take this decision as part of our overall strategy to reposition the Salvation Army and use our limited resources in the most appropriate way for mission.

"I want to thank all those who have ministered in Colne over the past 124 years. Only in eternity will we see the full impact of this ministry.

"We do have a responsibility to ensure that we make the best use of our resources and the funds kindly donated to us by the general public."

The service on Sunday will be taken by Captain and Mrs Hugh Macgill and will be followed by a special tea.
