LOCAL people are being consulted about traffic calming schemes in the area.

Proposed areas for the schemes are Edge Green Lane in Golborne and Holden Road and Siddow Common in Leigh.

The schemes are designed to cut the number of road accidents by reducing vehicle speeds and parking at locations which may encourage accidents.

And steps will be taken to promote healthy methods of travel such as walking or cycling, particularly for short journeys to schools and shops.

Suggested measures include the introduction of speed cushions, mini roundabouts, road narrowings, pedestrian refuge islands, "rumble" bars, 20mph speed limits and improvements to signs and road markings.

Wigan Council's Accident Investigation Officer, Neil Edgar, said: "The Council recognises the importance of consulting the public when introducing traffic calming schemes.

"The proposals are designed to benefit the residents of these areas.

"All comments received from residents will be considered during the final design of the schemes."

The Siddow Common scheme will focus on Bonnywell Road, Pennington Road, Hope Carr Road, Siddow Common and Mather Lane.

Local residents are invited to view the plans at an exhibition in St Joseph's Hall on Thursday, September 28 (4.30-7pm) and Friday, September 29 (2.30-5pm).

The exercise will be paid out of special Government funding aimed at reducing road accidents and improving safety.
