CO-OPERATION between health and council organisers brought Government praise as workers battled to beat the fuel drought.

Local MP and Government Cabinet Minister Ian McCartney praised the interchange between the sectors which meant doctors, nurses and pharmacists were issued with fuel from the council depot.

Health and social services staff have been meeting daily to ensure the vulnerable receive vital services.

At one stage in the crisis the Council and NHS Trust agreed a fuel swap.

The Council had limited stocks of petrol but was fast running out of diesel fuel and the Trust was in the opposite position. But no swap was necessary as a diesel supply arrived at a council depot.

MP McCartney said: "This was exactly the kind of working together the Government wants to see. I was pleased to learn agencies in Wigan co-operated so well in the interests of local people.
