COMPOSTING and recycling "green" household leftovers could go a long way to helping Blackburn with Darwen Council tackle waste disposal and care for the environment.

It is estimated that 25% of household waste is "green" and that all residents in the borough could benefit from the council saving cash on landfilling.

And the council's composting bin scheme has taken a major step towards educating householders across the borough about environment-friendly waste.

More than 5,000 homes already have the compost bins and more promotions are planned to encourage as many homes as possible to recycle their waste.

The bins are made by Blackburn company Weltonhurst, on Centurion Way.

Council recycling officer Stuart Hammond said: "We have had four promotions for home composting and all have proved very popular and successful. "Further sales are planned in the future so we can get as much green waste out of wheelie bins and back into the land as possible."

If you have a project that you think is worth celebrating then we want to hear about it. Or if you know someone who is doing good work for the environment and would like to nominate them for Grimebuster or Junior Grimebuster of the Year then let us know.
