PHILOSOPHICAL Sheffield Wednesday boss Paul Jewell admitted that a goalless draw was the best his shot-shy side could have hoped for at Turf Moor last night.

But even that prospect was taken away from them by Steve Davis's 74th-minute header which sentenced Wednesday to their eighth straight League defeat -- the worst run in the club's history.

"The effort was there but we didn't look like scoring a goal. The best we were going to get was 0-0. It's not planned that way, that's just the lack of firepower at the club," admitted Jewell, whose side is firmly anchored to the bottom of Division One.

"The youngsters battled ever so well but we lacked a lot of strength and we paid for it at a set-play. It was men against boys at times," he added.

Wednesday had a sprinkling of teenagers in their injury-hit line-up and were a pale shadow of the side that spent most of the 1990s in the Premiership. It must have been painful to watch for the travelling fans but Jewell, who is hoping to sign Efan Ekoku today, isn't ready to throw in the towel.

"We have got to pick ourselves up. We can't feel sorry for ourselves. It's a hell of a trot we're on but we've got to keep going," he said.

By way of contrast, Burnley are flying as they collected their fourth win in five League games and second Turf Moor victory in four days to stay seventh.

"It was just what the doctor ordered. I'm delighted to get the goal but it's all about the team as well. And in the end I think we got what we deserved," said Davis.

"I don't know the comparisons from this season to last, as regards how we've started off, but we're doing pretty well. We've got 22 points playing in a good league against good opposition and if we can keep that going we'll be delighted," he added.
