POLICE are anxious to trace two boxes of highly-explosive display fireworks stolen from a van in the early hours of Wednesday, October 11.

The Mercedes van was parked in the Forte Travel Lodge car park in Piele Road, Haydock, and it is believed the thieves broke into it some time after midnight.

A police spokesman stressed that the fireworks are for use at organised displays and are extremely dangerous because they are highly explosive.

Detective Sergeant Steve Lowe, said: "We are extremely concerned for the safety of the public. I would urge people not to touch or move these fireworks. If anyone is approached and asked if they want to buy these shells they should contact officers immediately. If lit these fireworks could cause serious or even fatal injuries."

The fireworks were in two 18-inch square boxes, each containing 36 shells, some the size of tennis balls. All the fireworks are labelled 'Made in China' and they should only be set off using proper mortar tubes.

Anyone who may have been offered fireworks fitting this description, or who may have any information which can help the police with their inquiries can contact the Incident Management Unit at St Helens Police Station on 0151 777 6969, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
