STUDENTS in Blackburn are being urged to apply for part of a £1 million boost for their local communities.

The money is to encourage young people to develop skills by working for their local community, and is run with the help of the Community Service Volunteers charity.

Each year the Barclays New Futures scheme awards cash to 100 schools across the country, ranging from £20,000 to £500.

To qualify students must choose their own project which includes at least one community partner such as a local business, community group or charity.

BBC newscaster Huw Edwards, who is judging the scheme, said it was a "superb way of getting young people to grasp the notion of citizenship".

He added: "It's a wonderful opportunity and I'd urge young people throughout the country to rise to the challenge in 2001."

All schools which are eligible for the scheme will be receiving application packs, or for more details call the Barclays New Futures Helpline on 020 7792 4949, or look at www.barclaysnewfutures.co.uk.
