TEETH: Bury's schools dental service was in desperate need of new recruits. Statistics showed that the Bury Area Health Authority had only one full-time dental officer and two part-time officers to provide dental care for some 32,000 school children in the borough.

CASH: A total of £1,392 after tax was paid on attendance allowances to Bury's councillors. Tottington councillor Bill Johnson was one of three councillors who declined to claim a penny for doing their elected job.

KICKED-OFF: Less than 24 hours before kick-off, East Ward Youth Club football team were told: "You cannot play on Wellington School pitch." The news from the town hall came as a shock and the crisis situation was handed over to youth club chairman, Councillor Geoffrey Kershaw. He explained: "the team plays on the Wellington pitch on Saturday's and a caretaker is employed specially to open the changing rooms and look after the ground. The team had played only one home match this season so his time was being wasted." Council officials said that they did not have a fixture list and had no information about when the team were playing. Nor did they know who was in charge. Coun Kershaw said the matter would have to be sorted out but gave permission for the game against Mill Lane 'B' to go ahead. East Ward lost 6-5.

DOWN: For the first time in eleven months, Bury's number of hard-core unemployed had shown a fall. The total of jobless people in the town had shown an overall decrease of 278 from 1,431. Of this figure, 904 were males.

LOANS: Repayments of a £500 bank loan were: £4.56 over 40 months, £3.57 over 60 months and £3.10 over 60 months.

SHAKERS: A scintillating display of attacking football from Bury ripped the heart out of Swindon's defence when they won a home fixture 5-0.

DANCE: Five years old Diane Healy of Weythorne Drive in Bury lifted the Helena Lehimiski dancing trophy after success at the Burnley Dance Festival. Diane who attended the Maureen Williams School of Dancing in the borough had only been dancing for ten months yet had won trophies at Blackpool, Manchester and Stretford.
