IT would appear that the council's ruling Labour group does not think it would be reasonable to hold a ballot on the form of local government for Blackburn with Darwen, as I asked (Letters, September 20).

However, Barnsley Council's ruling Labour group have shown more respect for their electorate by arranging to hold referendum in the form of local government to run their town. The choices are: a mayor with Cabinet; a mayor with council manager -- appointed by the council; and reverting to a mayor and full council to decide key policies.

Barnsley Council has taken the democratic path. Will Blackburn's Labour group follow their example?
