A GRANDMOTHER from Nelson has published her first novel at the age of 66 -- and it has already reached America, Asia and the United Arab Emirates.

Vera Bagust, of Clement View, is so proud of her first book 'Beyond the Shadows' she has sent copies to her daughter Jill in America, her son Neil in Abu Dhabi and her grandson John in Syria.

Originally from Burnley, Vera lived in France for three years before returning to Nelson.

When she took early retirement from her job as a care assistant due to ill health, she decided to use her time wisely.

She said: "I always wanted to write a book but never got round to it. It took me two-and-a-half years and a lot of research at Nelson Library.

"I had nothing in mind for the book. I just kept reading what people said about writing about something you know.

"I did work in Waltons Mill, which used to be in Gannow Lane, as a winder for three years and I liked doing the job. It sort of stemmed from there really. My book is based in the 1800s but obviously when I worked there the conditions weren't like that." Vera also published the book, referring to herself as Bagust Press, in conjunction with The Better Book Company Ltd.

She said: "They put it in book form for me but sent me it back a couple of times in loose form for me to re-mark things. They also sent three pictures for me to choose from for the front cover.

"Those who have read it have given some good reports and it seems to be selling to people buying it for their mums or grandmothers who have worked in the mills. I've sold one or two for Christmas presents too. It's a real boost.

"When I had it published I thought with it only being my first book it might not be any good at all so I only got 50 copies and now there's only four left, so I'll have to get some more done.

"I've been toying with the idea of doing a follow up and left the ending open for it. It would be in a different time period though.

"I think the second one would be easier. The first one is very hard to do especially when you are not a very good speller. It took longer having to go through the dictionary."

Beyond the Shadows, priced at £6.99, is available at Badger Books, in Keirby Walk, and Thoughts Card Shop, in Nelson.
