AFTER the local elections I said it was too early to get euphoric as the Independents had to prove they were as efficient as they'd led the electorate to believe.

I now wonder how many feel we've jumped out of the frying pan into the fire.

Certainly in general conversation circulating few agree with the leader of Tourism that all is well, or the Independents claim that we're moving up market. The consensus seems to be that the transformation of the Promenade has proved a false dawn and now there's a terrible danger of us drifting backwards. Certainly our first season of the new millennium has proved an unmitigated disaster. The exciting ideas they were keeping under wraps until after the election haven't materialized, and continuing to blame the old regime is wearing a bit slim. Lack of publicity for many events is amazing. The only publicity over the air was on the local radio, urging us to visit the exciting new rides at Frontierland, which surely contravened the Trades Description Act? The three sandy beaches seem to have suffered the same fate as other attractions: I cannot comment on the lights as I haven't seen them. What's in store for next season? The main transformation of Frontierland hasn't got the locals bubbling with excitement. What type of shops constitute an up market shopping area? For years it's been obvious we need an all weather amusement complex and Frontierland needs a major face-lift similar to what's happened in Southport. The only people rubbing their hands are absent landlords, who'd turn our resort into a haven for asylum seekers - for compassionate reasons of course.
