DRINKERS from a Walmersley Road pub swapped the comfort of their local for a tough outdoor challenge.

Landlord Martin Newman and fiancee Natalie McGrath managed to persuade drinkers from the Sundial Hotel to tackle the Krypton Factor Army Assault course at Holcombe in aid of the charity Heart Research.

The couple had good reason to raise money for the cause after Natalie and Martin both lost their fathers to heart disease.

Natalie said: "It has made us realise that it is not only unhealthy, inactive people who have heart problems and made us more aware of the massive importance of gaining a greater understanding of heart disease and its prevention." Both are pictured toasting the success of the event while Martin displays a certificate awarded following the event.

Five teams entered from the pub, and two managed to scoop prizes for being among the fastest finishers, with 54 groups in total taking part.

Scramble nets, pipes, and walls all stood in the way of participants and the finish line but teams from the pub all came through with flying colours. They have raised at least £500 so far.

Natalie, who recently had an operation on her spine, had to cheer teams on from the sidelines.

She said: "The course looked terrifying, especially the massive scramble net but everyone loved it. I was very disappointed at not being able to take part myself."

Martin and Natalie also host a quiz at the pub in aid of Heart Research at 9pm every Tuesday evening.
