I VISITED Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary a couple of weeks ago for the first time. I was looking for another female cat or kitten to accompany the one I have.

I was asked by staff whether I had any children under the age of five. I had my two-year-old with me and I was told that I couldn't have a cat because it was their policy not to let them go to anyone with children under five.

They said the reasons were that the cat may scratch the child or that the child may be allergic. Apparently they have had too many cats returned.

Cats do scratch, that's a fact, and there was no allowances made for the fact that my child clearly isn't allergic as I already have a cat!

I have a kind, loving home to offer to an unwanted animal, and I feel discriminated against because I have a child. I just don't understand this policy: it's crazy. There are so many unwanted animals in this world and programmes on the television every week about them wanting new homes. Well, I am here and I can't have one!
