I CAN assure Mrs Mason (Your Letters, Oct 13) that I have only one "face", and perhaps if she got her facts right then she wouldn't have egg on hers!

I am a tenant farmer and the only land I own is my garden. As for being one of the "privileged few" perhaps she would be surprised to know that I pay the same for my diesel as other members of the public and that the fuel used in my working tractors is charged at the same rate as other industrial users.

May I also remind Mrs Mason that the taking of direct action by farmers began under a Tory government, so politics doesn't come into it. The catalyst for the recent fuel dispute was the looming £4 a gallon threshold and not a right-wing political conspiracy organised by the Tories.

Mrs Thatcher's visit, which Mrs Mason refers to, was to land I now rent but I can assure her that I had nothing to do with that decision. And as for supporting legislation on picketing, I don't think that Mrs Thatcher needed my help or support when the present government seems intent on actually tightening those same laws.

By the way, is this correspondent the same Mrs Mason who campaigned tirelessly for the Labour Party in Bury only to find out when a Labour government finally got elected that they were not socialist after all?
