BURY boss Andy Preece is running the rule over an Icelandic international goalkeeper.

Gunnleifur Gunnleifsson is number two to Preston North End's Teuvo Moilanen in the Iceland squad and he's spending two weeks at Gigg Lane hoping to impress.

Although the Shakers boss denies any immediate move for Paddy Kenny the arrival of Gunnleifsson is sure to fuel speculation that the Bury custodian could be on his way.

Arsenal are the current favourites to land the former Bradford Park Avenue player who has become one of the hottest goalkeeping properties in the Nationwide League with a series of fantastic displays.

"We haven't had any offers for Paddy yet," declared Preece. "But people are bound to read something into it!

"This lad has been recommended to us and we'll see how he shapes. If we sign him it will have to be on a free though and that might be a stumbling block."

A strapping six foot plus, Gunnleifsson currently plies his trade with Keflavik in the Icelandic League and formerly played his soccer for Reykjavik.

The other player currently on trial at the club, striker Robert Dunn of Partick Thistle, didn't make it down from his Glasgow home yesterday because of the adverse weather conditions.

Meanwhile, the Shakers have been linked with another Scottish forward in Livingston's much travelled goalscorer Gerry Britton.

But Preece is playing down any immediate swoop for a striker and explained that it isn't as easy as just picking up a phone.

"We have clubs that we have a good relationship with but sometimes you hit a brick wall," he said.

"Some players don't want to come for whatever reason and I'm just finding out how difficult it can be.

"We know we need a new face to give everyone a lift and we've got scouts scouring the country for someone.

"It's just a case of finding someone who will fit the bill. But we'll keep looking until we find the right man."

The Bury boss was encouraged with Saturday's display at Wigan despite going down to a fifth successive defeat.

"I'll never know how we didn't win that game," he added. "I thought we did everything right and played some good stuff.

"But at the end of the day the scoreline said 1-0 to Wigan but I feel it could be the game that turns our season around for us."
