A FAMILY history buff from Newton-le-Willows has revived a fond memory for me in mentioning her links with a remarkable old man who was the town's oldest resident.

John Sankey, from Cross Lane, died in 1964 at the age of 98. And I still recall writing a piece about John and his son toddling off together to collect their old-age pensions at the local post office.

But it is John's younger brother, William, whom Mrs S. Brown, from Kent Way, Newton, is more concerned with. He was her grandfather who, sadly, did not enjoy the sort of longevity experienced by his brother.

A keen footballer right into middle-age, William died at the age of 66, in 1942.

To help with her family-tree researches, Mrs B would welcome any information.

So far, she has made good progress down the Sankey line, discovering that her grandad also had two younger brothers who lived locally: Hugh, from Legh Street (died 1953, aged 71); and Fred, from Hope Street (died 1965, aged 77).

But now, Mrs B would like to be put in contact with any of their relatives or descendants who might be able to help further with her researches.

ANYONE able to help could give her a ring on 01925-228619.
