Stourbridge 26 Liverpool St Helens 19

LSH came off second best in a thrilling encounter at Stourbridge on Saturday.

Kicking off with a gale force wind and driving rain at their backs, LSH got off to a dream start being awarded a penalty try in the first four minutes. Simon Worsley converted for a 7-0 lead.

Within minutes LSH went further ahead following a flowing move along the backs with full-back Mike Jones darting through the dazed Stourbridge defence for the score. Once again converted by Worsley.

The crowd were further stunned when Gaskell unleashed Fraser Harris to score in the corner establishing a 19-point lead after 20 minutes.

But the previously unbeaten Midlands side demonstrated why they are title contenders by applying sustained pressure on the LSH defence for the remainder of the half. The LSH pack stood firm and weathered the onslaught before inevitably yielding close to half-time to two Stourbridge pack tries to make it 10-19 at half- time.

Playing against the wind and rain, their opponents -- and seemingly at times, the referee -- the Moss Laners gave their all but they eventually succumbed to three penalties and a penalty try.

Their cause was not helped, however, by isolated moments of indiscipline bringing time in the sin bin for Botha and Grigg. The game fittingly ended with LSH camped on the Stourbridge line, just failing to provide the equalising score.

Eric Hughes is justifiably proud of the efforts and commitment on show and is equally aware of the need to translate recent improved performances into league points. The next opportunity is this coming Saturday November 4 at home to Sandal, kick-off 2.30pm. All welcome.
