THREE maroons which can be heard up to three miles away will signal the start of a two-minute silence in Pendle in memory of war victims.

Pendle Council is again supporting the Royal British Legion's campaign for two minutes silence by firing the maroons in Nelson, Colne and Barnoldswick at 11am on Saturday, November 11.

Geoff Yates, democratic and legal services principal committee administrator, said the maroons could be heard up to three miles away which meant that most people in the borough who wished to pause and take part in the act of Remembrance would be able to hear them.

A second maroon will signal the end of the silence.

During the five years that the Royal British Legion have been campaigning for the reinstatement of a national two minute silence on Armistice Day observation of the silence has risen from 57 per cent to 73 per cent.

The council supports the observation of the silence with a suspension of activity on local authority premises.
