I STAY in Sabden during the week and drive over the Nick of Pendle to get to work.

I was thoroughly disgusted by the amount of rubbish left behind by Hallowe'en revellers.

Cans, bottles, bin bags, pizza packaging and other items of rubbish were strewn across the roadside and surrounding countryside.

Some of the rubbish was in bin bags, or at least had started out in big bags, which suggests that caterers had not taken all their rubbish away with them.

The people responsible for this state of affairs -- and they know who they are -- ought to be ashamed of themselves. It would serve them right if the hill was closed to the public altogether.

If you must "play out" on Pendle on Hallowe'en, then please tidy up after yourselves and help preserve the countryside for others.

Surely you wouldn't treat your own back gardens like this, so why do it in ours?

If this was caused by "townies," then I am ashamed to say that I was brought up a "townie."

Celebrate as you will, but spare a thought for the residents in the areas in which you celebrate and leave it as you would prefer to find it.
