HEALTH bosses have been given an inflation-busting boost to improve NHS services in the borough in the next year.

The Government has awarded Bury and Rochdale Health Authority £297 million for next year, a rise of £23 million.

This represents an 8.67 per cent rise in cash terms and 6 per cent in real terms.

The cash includes large sums to tackle premature deaths from illnesses such as heart disease and cancer as well as high infant mortality rates.

The authority will receive £3.2 million to tackle health inequalities and premature deaths, and get further increases of at least six per cent in the next two years.

Ivan Lewis, MP for Bury South, said the extra money should mean big improvements for patients living in Radcliffe, especially those with cancer and heart problems.

And he said that Tory plans for the NHS would cost local people £9 million.
