PASSENGERS on a double decker bus had to shout and scream at the driver as they headed towards the restricted height bridge on Torrisholme Road.

Instead of turning into Scale Hall Lane, the bus driver continued along Torrisholme Road towards the bridge, which has been the scene of two serious accidents involving buses in the last three years.

Just two months ago the top floor of a double decker bus was completely ripped off when it smashed into the railway bridge.

This followed an accident in 1997 when passengers narrowly escaped serious injury when their bus ploughed into the bridge.

Passenger Sarah Clifton was on the Stagecoach bus on Wednesday morning and grew increasingly concerned as it continued up Torrisholme Road.

"I was on the bus at around 9.50am and they had just swapped drivers at the Shrimp," said Sarah.

"It should have turned down Scale Hall Lane and onto Morecambe Road but the driver kept on going down Torrisholme Road. It was a full bus and I thought hang on a minute, we're heading towards the bridge. I shouted out, as did quite a lot of people, and it was obvious that the driver was completely unaware of what he was doing wrong. Luckily, we stopped outside the school and he pulled up and turned the bus around."

She added: "You've got to ask what's going on when the bus drivers keep making this same mistake."

Despite repeated attempts to obtain a comment from Stagecoach, none was forthcoming at the time of going to press.
