A SEARCH was launched last night after a man was seen holding on to a bridge over a river in Colne.

Police were alerted at 9.15pm and brought in the Rossendale Search and Rescue Team and the force helicopter to join in the search.

Despite an extensive examination of the area downstream from the bridge at Whitewell Drive nothing was found. The search resumed in daylight this morning.

Sergeant Mick Heyworth said: "We were told there was a man hanging on to the bridge and looking as though he was about to jump.

"A full search of the area was made but nothing was found. The river is not flowing fast enough to sweep anyone far downstream but the search was resumed this morning checking down river just in case."

The stream Colne Water runs into Pendle Water.

A patient missing from Burnley General Hospital was found and discounted from the inquiry.
