THE immediate rewards aren't as great but if Burnley need any extra inspiration going into tonight's FA Cup replay at Scunthorpe they need only cast their minds back as far as May.

The Clarets went to Glanford Park on the final day of last season knowing that victory could be enough to take them into Division One.

So it proved as Gillingham slipped up at Wrexham to hand Burnley the chance they eagerly accepted with a 2-1 victory and Stan Ternent's side are now in search of a repeat to set up a fourth-round trip to Bolton Wanderers.

"If the result was to be the same then we would be happy. That was a nice day for everyone connected with Burnley so hopefully tonight we'll have the same sort of feeling after the game," said manager Stan Ternent.

Returning to the scene of their triumph and using the same dressing room in which they celebrated their First Division return should conjure up positve images for the Clarets.

And central defender Mitchell Thomas is hoping to recapture the mood of eight months ago.

"It was a good game. The crowd were cheering when Wrexham scored then that was a bit nullified when Scunthorpe scored.

"But we came back through Micky Mellon and Glen Little so they are great memories for us and hopefully we can emulate that tonight," said the former FA Cup winner.

Burnley and Scunthorpe are now two divisions apart as the Iron exited the Second Division at the opposite end to the Clarets on that famous Spring day.

The gulf was non-existent when the two sides drew 2-2 at Turf Moor ten days ago thanks only to Lennie Johnrose's last-gasp equaliser for Burnley after dangerman Lee Hodges and Guy Ipoua had scored for Scunthorpe.

But Ternent is out to make the most of that reprieve and stamp the Clarets' authority on the replay.

"We will be expected to win it, but it won't be easy.

"But we won't play as badly as we did against them at our place, so that will certainly be a step in the right direction for us," he added.

"We look forward to a competitive match and a tough game but the prize is big and we will be up and ready for it.

"They played very well against us and you've got to give them credit for that. But our lads stuck at it to come out with a draw and I was happy about that because we had been on a run of losses."

That run was ended by Johnrose's priceless goal and Burnley put another brick in the wall by drawing 0-0 at Gillingham on Saturday thanks to their first clean sheet since early December.

Another one tonight would give the Clarets every chance of progressing to the last 32 -- unless the game is goalless after extra-time and Scunthorpe win on penalties -- and Ternent is keen to take on local rivals Bolton in round four with the chance of a cup run. "With it being Bolton and a derby match if we could manage to get through this replay it would be a fantastic day out for everyone connected with the club," he said.

"It would probably be a full house, the Reebok's a nice place to go and to play against Bolton would be good. The League obviously is our priority but we would like to go as far as we possibly can in the cup and if you're winning matches it breeds confidence.

"We can only gain from those sorts of experiences so I would like to have a big cup run."
