ANDY Payton is pushing for a Clarets recall as Burnley look for the goals to book a fourth-round FA Cup trip to Bolton.

The Clarets 12-goal top-scorer was left on the bench for the second game in a row at Gillingham on Saturday.

And while boss Stan Ternent was pleased with the efforts of Ian Moore and Graham Branch, he may be tempted to turn to Payton for tonight's third-round replay at Scunthorpe United.

Burnley have found goals hard to come by in recent times but Ternent is confident that will change and Payton is clearly in his thoughts.

He said: "I think sooner or later they will start going in. All you can do is create chances and hope somebody puts them in.

"I think that Branchy and Mooro have done very well. The only thing is it's difficult to leave somebody like Payts on the line, so I'll have a think about that one.

"Andy's a proven goalscorer, but then again Mooro and Branchy can score goals and we've got to get more goals from midfield."

As well as Payton, Paul Crichton is also standing by for a return against the Third Division side as goalkeeper Nik Michopoulos is nursing a knee injury.

"Nik got a knock on the side of his knee so we'll see how he is. If he's fit he'll play if he isn't then I'll put Paul Crichton in," Ternent confirmed.

Kevin Ball looks set to return after completing his three-match ban and Brad Maylett may also be in the squad after shaking off a thigh injury as Burnley look to make the most of the reprieve given them by Lennie Johnrose's late goal in a 2-2 draw at Turf Moor 10 days ago.

And Mitchell Thomas is hoping that dramatic equaliser has tipped the tie Burnley's way going into a replay which will be decided by extra-time and penalties if necessary.

"Lennie scored in injury-time and sometimes people say that's all you need for a good cup run.

"I remember having it at Tottenham earlier in my career when we've nicked a goal right at the death or drawn and gone back and beaten teams and gone on all the way to win it.

"That's what happens in the Cup and we're just glad that we're in the hat and we've got another chance," said the defender, who helped Spurs to Wembley glory in 1991.

Thomas and company were given a rough ride by the Scunthorpe front pair of Guy Ipoua and Steve Torpey in the first meeting.

But having restored some stability with a clean sheet at Gillingham on Saturday, Thomas is confident about the challenge ahead at Glanford Park.

He added: "It's going to be a difficult game. They proved at our place that they are a good side so we will have to be on the ball.

"But we got a good point at Gillingham and spirits are high so we are going to go there to win the game.

"Ipoua did well when we played them in the live game last season. He's a lively character and he's strong but I think if we perform to the best of our ability we are capable of winning the game.

"It's very important, not just for the players but for the fans and for the revenue of the club. Everyone likes a good cup run and hopefully we can continue that."

Scunthorpe will give a late check to player-coach Russ Wilcox who missed Saturday's 1-0 defeat at Chesterfield through flu. Stuart Thom deputised in defence and is likely to do so again if Wilcox is not feeling 100 per cent.
