PEOPLE in Pendle who suffer from a disability may be eligible for cheaper bus and rail fares.

Pendle Council is working with Lancashire County Council to administer a new extended concessionary travel scheme.

The concessions will benefit a wider range of disabilities than previous taken into consideration.

The new scheme will include anyone who is

blind or partially sighted

profound or severely deaf

without speech

has a disability or injury which has a substantial and long term adverse effect on ability to work

does not have arms or has long term loss or use of both arms

has a learning difficulty

would fail to qualify for a driving licence because of disability.

The current scheme offers women over 60 and men over 65 half fare travel. It also offers blind, partially sighted or disabled people a flat rate up fare.

John Kirk, Pendle Council's executive director (services) said: "This new scheme has been introduced to help people with a wider range of disabilities to save money on fares.

"Unlike some authorities Pendle does not charge for the passes required to take advantage of the scheme."

Travel passes are issued by Pendle Council and are available from the reception at Nelson Town Hall.
