CULT groups who preyed on a Preston woman after the tragic death of her husband have found a fresh target -- the very councillor who helped blow the lid on the scam!

Councillor Bill Chadwick, who took up the case of Mrs Kathleen Foy from Ingol after she was hounded by European cult groups when her husband Peter died last year, has himself been inundated by letters from psychic groups claiming to "completely transform his life in love, luck and money".

The groups, from Geneva, Italy and America, send numerous letters to people with offers of help -- as long as they are sent money to cover "administration costs and postage and packing".

The Citizen highlighted Mrs Foy's heartache last month after she received hundreds of letters from cult groups claiming to help her "in this particularly difficult situation".

Councillor Chadwick, leader of Preston's Liberal Democrat group, said: "When I asked people to contact me if they had received similar scams to those received by Mrs Foy, little did I think that the groups would target me!

"Now I receive a mailing offering good fortune on Thursday February 8.

"I can see the funny side of it, but really we must take action to help vulnerable people like Mrs Foy who are getting this stuff after bereavements. That is neither funny nor pleasant.

"Lancashire's Trading Standards has briefed me on the need for a 'Junkmail Bill' and the efforts our Euro MP Chris Davies is making in Brussels should keep this matter on the political agenda.

"And I do want to hear from people -- not Mystic Megs -- who have received this muck."

He added: "I will report to The Citizen if anything nice happens to me on Thursday February 8.

"There are no council meetings that day, thank God, so I should be safe!"
