LIKE most of the British people, I have no objection to the genuine asylum seekers coming to Britain, but I do object to the bogus ones who are coming for economic reasons. We are being swamped basically because we are seen as a soft touch.

The last government had a poor record on this issue, but since Jack Straw became Home Secretary, the situation has got really out of hand.

According to a report by MPs in the last two years, there have been 150,000 arrivals, excluding dependants, but only 15,000 removals.

Mr Straw has been attacked in this page for his record on fighting crime. His record is no better on cutting down the number of asylum seekers coming to Britain.
