COUNCIL leaders are urging people not registered to vote to get in touch with their local local authority ---fast.

The deadline for registering to vote in the May local elections is Monday.

Leaders of all three political groups in the council came together to convince people not on the register to contact the council quickly.

Council leader Malcolm Doherty said it was vital for local democracy that people are on the register to vote regardless of their political views. He said: "It is important that those people who are elected to provide your local services are given a proper mandate so please ensure you have the opportunity to have your say." Leader of the Conservative group Coun Colin Rigby said: "If people are not on the register their voice can't be heard."

And Coun Paul Browne, the Lib Dem leader, added: "If you do not register you do not have a voice when it comes to deciding how your council tax money is spent.

"You are effectively letting others speak for you."
