A TEENAGER who burgled a Darwen home had to face the music when his fingerprints were traced on compact discs.

William McClung left behind the tell-tale clue during his raid on the Entwistle Street property.

The householder was having a bath at the time in April last year, Preston Crown Court heard.

McClung, 19, of Redearth Road, Darwen, had pleaded guilty to a burglary charge.

Miss June Morris, prosecuting, said McClung went in and rifled through the man's CDs. He also stole two leather jackets.

The victim later came downstairs to find CDs scattered on the floor. When the discs were forensically examined the defendant's fingerprints were found on them.

Mr Daniel King, defending, said McClung had a very unsettled personal family history.

He had abused alcohol from an early age and went on to get involved in crime. Last year a relationship broke down with his then partner, as a result of which his alcohol abuse worsened.

Mr King said: "This incident occurred after he had consumed a large amount of alcohol. He was walking past the house when he says he saw the front door open.

"For reasons that he finds difficult to explain, he decided to go inside. His recollection of what happened is not entirely clear. The items were sold for a relatively paltry amount."

Judge John Townend made a 12 month probation order. He said the fact that the defendant had served time in custody since the offence was one of the reasons he was making a probation order.
