ELDERLY residents in Skerton are preparing to challenge the council over new plans to site yet more mobile phone masts on top of their tower block.
An application from Orange to fix six microwave dishes on top of Bridge House on Mainway has upset tenants who are hoping the council will stick to their promise that no more masts will be installed.
"Members of Mainway Community Association are totally against this latest proposal," said Vice Chairman, Dave Warner.
"We were assured by the council that there would be no increase in usage. The Government report into mobile phone masts said that they should not be sited near schools. We have five schools close to Bridge House. The report also said there should be annual checks on radiation levels. I understand the council have made one such check but despite asking for the results I have so far received nothing."
Another mobile phone company recently approached the council with plans to site masts on top of Park House.
A council spokesman said they were aware of the tenant's concerns and added: "Orange are within their rights to submit plans but it will be decided at committee. We have stated in the past that we will resist the proliferation of mobile phone masts on top of Bridge House."
