A LANCASTER schoolgirl has turned tragedy into triumph to win a prestigious award.

Suzanna Dixon was devastated by the untimely death of her brother but the tragedy motivated her to help others.

And her incredible enthusiasm and desire to improve life for people on the Newton estate where she lives has secured her first prize in the Lancashire Young Citizen Awards.

The 15-year-old Central Lancaster High School pupil has organised day trips for youngsters on the estate and secured a piece of derelict land which she hopes one day will become a community centre. And although she's busy helping people she still finds time to be a young firefighter at Lancaster Fire Station.

"I was gobsmacked when I heard I'd won and very excited," said Suzanna. "When my brother died I didn't want others going through what we went through so I started trying to help people. I enjoyed getting involved in the community and it's rewarding when something you've done makes people smile."

One of Suzanna's biggest successes has been obtaining an area of wasteland from a local company which has the potential to become a community centre for the Newton estate.

She explained: "We've got the land and now we're waiting for planning permission. Local children have offered to clear the area and paint the community centre. I'm busy doing something everyday and when I get older I'd love to be a youth and community worker."

Commenting on Suzanna's award, Juliet Grant, Lancaster City Council's Housing Services' Estate Manager, said: "She very much deserves the recognition. She has been involved from the start with the Newton Tenants and Residents' Association, taking the position of one of the Young Persons Representative. She has helped to organise the very successful fun days which have been held on the estate and has worked hard with residents and the council to develop the football pitch which will soon be available for youngsters' use.

"Suzanna is a valuable member of the association and a pleasure to work with. She is popular with everyone and puts great energy and enthusiasm into everything she does."
