TWENTY Accrington residents have joined forces to brighten up their area.

They have formed the Spindleberry Tenants Association and hope to strengthen their community in the Woodnock area.

Space, a housing association with 2,000 properties in the North West, have donated £75 to help its set-up.

Barry Dawson, the Spindleberry Tenants Association chairman, said: "It's amazing how quickly local people have got involved and a great way to build our community.

"Our first initiative is to brighten up the garden areas by planting new bulbs and shrubs. We're also planning to organise days out for the residents."

Stephen Reuben, Space chief executive, said: "Eleven tenants groups have now been set up by our residents across the North West and this is our first group in Accrington.

"The residents have plenty of ideas which will help to create a close-knit community."
