GOOSNARGH and Longridge Agricultural Society Show which has been going since before World War Two has become the most recent victim of the foot and mouth epidemic.

The committee decided unanimously that the July 7 date was to be cancelled, the first time since war broke out.

The decision was taken in order to protect the farming community from unecessary contamination of the virus which could be encouraged through non-essential movement of livestock.

Instead, organisers of the show are to concentrate on other events to be held later in the year.

The Sunday Lunch scheduled for April 22 and the frog race on April 27, both to have been held in the village hall, have been postponed to dates to be arranged.

Elsewhere in the Ribble Valley, Chipping Steam Rally which was due to go ahead in May has been cancelled.

A decision has yet to be made whether the village's agricultural show will go ahead or not.

In addition, no information has been forwarded in respect of Sawley Steam Rally, which was scheduled for the beginning of June, nor the Hodder Valley Show in September.
