I AM writing in response to a letter printed in the Citizen dated March 22, 2001 regarding the litter-lout bin men.

I am in total agreement with fed up of Bolton-le-Sands, may I add that the dustbin bags are so thin that I have to provide an outer bag, as the bag always burst open when they are removed from the dustbin.

I always take my bin bags to just inside the front gate, this is more to save myself from sweeping up my drive every week rather than to make the dustman's job easier.

I can't help but notice that even though my bags are two yards from the collection pile the bin man throws the bag over the gate, which nine times out of 10 manages to catch the gate and tear them open and causes a spillage which never seems to be picked up.

When I complained to the refuge department I was told that the bin men will clean up any spillage (they did not tell me when though) as this still goes on years later.

If everyone were to get a wheelie bin the long term effect would be a saving as nobody would need a bin bag again, which would double the saving the council announced (£14,000 to £28,000).

Also, the environment would be saved as there would be much less litter blowing about on the streets, also the council would not need to employ as many bin men as they are not good value for money, I feel.
