THE British Championship motorcycle racing circus rolled into Donington Park for the season opening event last weekend, with Morecambe's own John McGuiness competing in the Supersport class with his new Castrol Honda CBR600F Sport and new team to get to grips with.
Despite a holed radiator in practice , McGuinness qualified 6th and, in the race proper, produced a sensible ride to gain 11pts for 5th place.
Teenage sensation Chris Vermulen on the Castrol Honda World Supersport machine, though he will not be contending any further British championship rounds. John' chief title contenders, Australian teamate Kirk McCarthy and Yamaha's Matt Lewellyn finished second and third respectively, with Ulsterman Woolsey Coulter on the Suzuki fourth.
The championship moves to Silverstone over the Bank Holiday weekend with McGuinness buoyant about his prospects as he gets the feel for his new bike and team. John and girlfriend Becky proudly paraded newborn baby boy Ewan Max at Donington. John's observation on son and heir? "He's great, but he just lies there doing nothing."
