BURNLEY RESERVES 2 BARNSLEY RESERVES 3

Clarets keeper Paul Crichton was given the chance of a sharpener in the reserves last night but ended up picking the ball out of the net three times -- including Barnsley's injury-time winner.

Crichton was at fault as he misjudged a long-range drive from full-back David Mulligan, anticipating a cross but then being beaten into the bottom corner as he scrambled across his goal.

Mulligan's last-gasp strike spoiled a brave fightback by Burnley's young side who came back from 2-0 down and finished the game with 10 men.

The Clarets looked to have no chance at half-time but reserve team boss Mick Docherty made a double switch with John Learly and John Williamson coming on.

Williamson, just back from a broken toe, added further presence up front and it was his brave header that helped bring about Burnley's 75th-minute equaliser through Paul Barrett.

However, Williamson collected a painful blow to the side of his forehead and had to go off, leaving the Clarets, who had earlier made their third substitution, to finish the game a man short.

The lively Joel Pilkington went close to giving the home side an early lead but his header from Anthony Shandran's cross was cleared off the line.

And Barnsley went ahead after 12 minutes when Paul Jackson poked home a cross from Darren Young.

Shandran then tested Richard Siddall at the other end with Pilkington again being thwarted from the rebound but the Tykes went into the break two-up thanks to a Craig Goodyear penalty after Sean McClare had been upended by Chris Scott.

However, Burnley hit back strongly after the interval and Williamson hit the keeper and the outside of the post from the rebound after being teed up by Shandran's smart turn.

The breakthrough finally came after 70 minutes when Williamson returned the favour from a quick free-kick to play in Shandran who capitalised on defensive uncertainty to make it 2-1.

And with their tails up the Clarets then levelled with a stunning goal.

Alex Kevan started the move in his own penalty area and Barrett, Leeson and Williamson all played their part before Barrett provided the final touch.

With Williamson having to go off Burnley were then pushed back but a deserved point seemed to be theirs before Crichton's uncharacteristic error.

Burnley: Crichton, Leeson, Pilkington, Scott, Davis, Eves (Williamson 46), Bowden (Barrett 68), Kevan, Shandran, Boardman, O'Neill (Leary 46).
