NEIGHBOURS came to the rescue when Haslingden and Helmshore Brass Band faced a £10,000 repair bill for the roof at its practice rooms.
Grane Road Residents' Association set about fund-raising and made £250 at a social night. Then the group appealed to the local Clifford Howarth Charity Trust, which decided that because of the band's long tradition in the valley and the fact that it encouraged young musicians, it would donate £5,000 -- solving the main repair headache at a stroke.
"We were absolutely gobsmacked to hear the news and we are very grateful," to the residents, the trust and to the Telegraph for inspiring support in the first place," said band spokesman Kath Thacker.
