VICKY Gill is "the discovery of the winter -- relatively inexperienced but very mature in her running" according to UK Athletics' Technical Director for Endurance Zara Hyde Peters.

The 20-year-old Chorley Harrier has just been selected for the Norwich Union GB and NI Team for the Seoul International Relay, following her sparkling GB debut at the Yokohama Ekiden Relay in Japan in February.

The team flew out on Tuesday and they will be staying at the Olympic Village until Sunday's Race, which is another Ekiden Relay consisting of seven legs over the marathon distance of 26.2 miles.

It will be her first race since Japan because of the foot and mouth.

And it should act as a sharpener for Balmoral the following weekend when she will win her first England vest in the five mile race.

It has been a hectic couple of weeks for the medical student.

She has just returned from Florida where she has been looking at the university with a view to taking an athletics scholarship.

She thought the facilities were fantastic, but the highlight was being introduced to Jonathan Edwards who was training in the gym.

VANESSA Peacock finished first veteran and second lady in the Colin and Brenda Robinson Road Race. She completed the 4.3 miles in 26:17, less than a minute behind Lisa Heyes of Salford. Willy Smith from the Keighley and Craven club was the men's winner, but there were three East Lancashire runners in the top ten -- Steve Clawson of Rossendale seventh, Craig Waton of Clayton ninth and Red Rose's Will Garner 10th. Peter Dibb was again the M65 winner in 30:46. Andy O' Sullivan's last four races have netted £1200 for Rochdale Hospice, which was presented this week.

ATHLETES from three different clubs shared the plaudits at the Trafford Open Meeting. Laura Finucane of Pendle AC set an English Schools Entry Standard and PB of 2:17.2 in the under 17's 800m and set a PB 26.8 secs for 200m, while Park High School AC's Louise Dickinson set new marks in the under 15 sprints with 12.8 secs for the 100m and 25.9 secs for the 200m. Meanwhile Chris Hart, from Burnley AC, was second in the under 17 3000m, and in a busy week was also third under 17 in the Salford 3K road race.

MAISIE Bonney was Burnley AC's youngest winner at the Warrington Medal meeting when she took first place in the under 9's 600m. Danielle Walker ran a Grade 1 standard of 2:31 as she won the under 13's 800m in a PB. In the same age group Amy Leeming was second in the high jump and third in the 200m, while Alexis Walker was second in the under 15's 1500m. Daniel Whittaker won both the under 17's sprints in 11.8 secs and 23.8 secs with Simon Woods taking third in the 100m.

THERE was a hat-full of PB's for Hyndburn athletes at Warrington with Joanne McVey leading the way with three. The under 13 won both of the jumps and finished third in the 70m hurdles. Another under 13, Callum Fitzpatrick set his new marks in the 800m which he won and the 1500m where he was second. The Highton's both progressed -- under 15 Louise in the 1500m and long jump and under 11 Beth in the 600m, while Damien Rawcliffe lowered his time for the under 13's 100m.

HYNDBURN AC is the latest club to set up a website. Included is a track and field timetable, and a recommendation for the Wednesday and Thursday night athletics coverage in the Lancashire Evening Telegraph. Site address is www.hyndburn.ac.btinternet.co.uk.

Sue Becconsall was third, winning the F40 class in 1:29:28 and Blackburn Road Runner Sandra Snape was second F35 in 1:41:37.
