THE decision to use a Bury quarry as a mass grave for animals culled during the foot and mouth crisis is under review.

Government officials are looking again at plans to use the Viridor landfill site in Pilsworth as a burial chamber for "uninfected" livestock .

Local residents, politicians and farmers have all voiced their concerns.

They fear the mass grave would pose health risks and contaminate the land.

The Bury site is one of 61 nationwide to be approved for the burial of slaughtered pigs and sheep.

A spokesman for Viridor Waste Management, which run the quarry, said the operation would pose no significant risk to the nearby community.

But Jim Booker, of nearby Captain's Farm, warned: "If the animals are part of the preventative cull then there is no guarantee they are not infected."
