A NEW garden at a primary school in which the children were instrumental in helping design and build has been officially opened.

Groundwork Blackburn Education Team has been working with a group of children at Roe Lee Park Primary School calling itself the Garden Club. The aim of the club has been to provide opportunity for youngsters to learn about and participate in gardening activities.

Under the watchful eye of the Blackburn Groundwork Environmental Task Force, pupils from Roe Lee have helped dig out the beds, paint the benches, plant bulbs and generally construct the allotment-style garden.

The official opening marks the end of the construction phase of the project and the beginning of the first growing season.

The children have decided what plants they want to grow and will include pumpkins, tomatoes, herbs and ornamental grasses and flowers.

The project is supported by Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council's Out of School Hours.
