A PENSIONER suffered burns to her hands when she tried to extinguish a chip pan fire with a jug of water.
Mrs Caroline Reeves (76) was taken to Bury General Hospital for treatment to her injuries, described as "not serious".
Fire chiefs in Bury are again warning the public of the dangers of pouring water on burning fat.
A spokesman for Bury fire service said: "We have all seen what happens when water is used to try and extinguish a chip pan fire. Put quite simply, the pan explodes.
"That is what happened in this case and left the elderly lady with burns to her hands. Her hair was also singed."
Three fire crews attended the flat in Griffin Close, Bury, at 8.30pm on Thursday (March 29). Mrs Reeves and a friend were outside the flat on their arrival.
Fire damage was contained to the kitchen area as a result of the flash flame.
