LEIGH'S Bedford Methodist Primary School pupils are good eggs.

They have shown their 'eggs-cellent' grasp of knowing value for money by winning the borough's annual Easter Competition.

Over 130 children from local schools took part in the event, which involves them making a detailed comparison of three different examples, then creating a display to illustrate their findings about which represents the best value.

The pupils compared price, packaging and taste, and special marks were given for the originality of displays.

Bedford Hall's year 4 based theirs on the nursery rhyme egg Humpty Dumpty.

Organiser, Liz Woods, of Wigan Council's consumer advice staff, said: "All the schools worked hard, but we must especially congratulate Bedford Hall.

"Teachers are always pleased to find that children do understand that the egg with the brightest packaging, or even the one that looks as though it contains the most chocolate is not always the most sensible one on which to spend pocket money.

"They learn important lessons about advertising and price."

The Mayor, Cllr Joan Hurst, presented the school with £50 gift vouchers and each child with a certificate and creme egg.

The school also won £30 in vouchers as Wigan's entry for the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities' regional final.
