CAMPAIGNS come and campaigns go.

Some are won and many lost so it is especially pleasing when somebody actually gets the pot of gold at the end of their particular rainbow. Seven years is a long time but it was a worthwhile wait for the gallant group from Morts Astley Heritage Trust who persevered when hope seemed lost in their quest to save ancient Dam House.

Securing £2.4m of Lottery funding helped them realise their dream when a Astley heirloom seemed in jeopardy.

When Astley Hospital was judged surplus to the region's health requirements many feared the mansion and conservation area would be blitzed as property developers moved in to a prime spot. Thankfully what took place was a compromise with tasteful handling of housing development and building conversion combined with a sympathetic refurbishment of the magnificent old hall. On this occasion developers, planners and conservationists worked in unison to recreate the pride of the village. They deserve congratulations for their sterling efforts.

Now many will have the chance to enjoy the splendour of the old hall and grounds because full use is being made of the spacious accommodation which will benefit all sections of the community.

Those who refused to be directed away from their target will be long remembered for saving an important piece of local history. We are indebted to them for giving the community the chance to enjoy a whopping lottery scoop! Thank you.
