HARD core troublemakers are being targeted on a housing estate where unruly teenagers are making life hell.

Families on Hindley's Borsdane Estate, who are hoping innovative Police action will have the desired effect, have received a first newsletter from community bobby PC Sean Mullaney (right) in a bid to increase their awareness of crime and disorder.

In it he appeals to both car owners and parents to help make life more difficult for the pests who in January stole more than 15 vehicles which were later abandoned in the area. And over the past two years £24,000 has been spent replacing glass in broken windows at Mornington High School.

Backed by the Wigan and Leigh Community Safety Partnership, as well as local tenants, residents and schools, PC Mullaney says that most of the crime and nuisance is directly attributed to the actions of a few.

He says: "In my experience, dealing with incidents on a daily basis, I find that the people responsible for the majority of problems in the area are a relatively small hard core of teenagers, who seemingly do not realise they are making people's lives a misery.

'Let's make life difficult for these trouble makers."

PC Mullaney advises owners to take measures to stop their cars being stolen and leave nothing of value inside them.

He also appeals to parents of young people to check that they are not being lead astray, drinking alcohol, misbehaving or causing a nuisance somwhere.

"Often parents don't realise what their children are doing until it is too late, when they're in trouble."

Chairman of the Hindley East Community Risk Management, Cllr Stuart Shaw, said: "The vast majority of local residents of the Borsdane Estate are highly respectable and law abiding.

"Sadly their quality of life is being destroyed by a small band of teenagers.

"Now the residents, led by their local bobby, have decided that they are paying too high a cost. Communities can only be persuaded to take action when they know the facts.

"We are confident that a regular newsletter of this kind will do a great deal towards improving the sad record of crime in our area."

PC Mullaney has also appealed to residents for their constructive ideas regarding ways to make the area a better and safer place.
