LOCAL newsagents Len and Susan Cloake of Corner Lane, Leigh, always keen to help and support amateur sport, persuaded their newspaper delivery lads to enter the National Federation of Retail Newsagents Newsboys National Five-a-Side Football Championships.
Knowing that the lads were well versed at the 11-a-side game, Len took on the job of coach and helped prepare them for the five games in the North West Regional final at Stretford Leisure Centre. They were helped by Westleigh High School who loaned their mini bus for the occasion.
The Leigh lads met teams from Blackburn, Todmorden and Manchester areas, playing eight games to win their way through to the final where they beat a strong Blackburn side 6-0.
The lads now travel to Birmingham on May 20 for the National Finals at the Aston Villa Leisure Centre.
The Leigh squad was: Daniel Pilkington, Twins Ben and Neil Wright, Lee Derbyshire, David Smith and John Lyons.
