Cola quencher in Nou Camp

WATCHING Barcelona wage war with Liverpool in the Nou Camp on Thursday night looked to have little in common with the Clarets.

But it wasn't always thus.

Back in 1957 Burnley were invited to Barcelona to play in a four-team tournament to mark the opening of the stadium.

The Clarets played against Flamenco of Brazil while Barcelona took on arch rivals Real Madrid.

Burnley struggled in the heat as they lost 4-0, not helped by the refreshments on offer.

The players had bottles of Coca Cola pitchside to quench their thirst but apparently ended up with stomach ache thanks to all the bubbles. Charity boost BIG-hearted Burnley last night boosted the Football League's 'League of Five' charity appeal to the tune of £7,620.

The Clarets handed over a cheque, their proceeds from the Charity Shield Fund, to Football League chief executive David Burns at half-time of last night's derby with Preston.

"I am enormously grateful to Burnley for their donation," said Burns.

The League of Five covers five major charities in the country supported by the Football League. John's shiner THANKFULLY young Clarets pro John Williamson suffered no serious damage when forced out of the action in the mid-week reserve defeat by Barnsley.

Williamson collected a painful whack around the eye when bravely going in to help Burnley force an equaliser.

However, he was up and about at Turf Moor again on Thursday morning sporting nothing worse than an enormous shiner. Ronnie's slot RONNIE Jepson was last night looking to add another string to his bow as a television analyst. The veteran striker, out injured with Achilles tendon trouble, was Sky's studio guest for the Clarets' derby clash against Preston. Barnes brace FORMER Burnley striker Paul Barnes has wasted no time in settling into the groove with new club Nuneaton Borough.
