BURY's released striker Lee Buggie could find a footballing home not a million miles away from the one he has just left if Radcliffe Borough boss Kevin Glendon has his way.

And former Stoke City midfielder Nigel Gleghorn is another target for the ambitious Boro boss.

Glendon is keen on trying to persuade local lad Buggie to come to Stainton Park after being freed by the Shakers.

Buggie, who has had loan spells at Workington and Rochdale, will no doubt be looking to stay in the Nationwide League, but if nothing comes up, Glendon may be able to persuade Buggie to try his hand with the Boro, if only temporarily.

"I have always liked the lad," said Glendon. "I will be having a chat with him to see if we can work something out. Lots of lads have stepped down to non-league and then gone on to return to the Football League and make a success of it. Thius could be a case in point."

Gleghorn has had a taste of non-league with a spell as manager at Witton Albion and on the coaching staff at Altrincham, but Glendon would be looking to use him as a player in his usual midfield role or up front.

If Gleghorn did come to Stainton Park it would add to Glendon's "Dad's Army" of veterans. He brought in Mark Carter, Gus Wilson and Phil Power last season and would not be afraid to add to that.

Boro had the reputation of being a young team, but Glendon says: "You need to mix it with a bit of experience and people like Nigel would certainly do that."

Meanwhile, Glendon has been busy arranging friendlies with some top class opposition as he gets down to the task of preparing for the 2001-2002 season. On July 14 Bolton Wanderers will be at Stainton Park for a game that Glendon expects could attract as many as 2,000 spectators. Four days later Bury visit, then Kevin Keegan will send a Manchester City reserve team to play Boro on July 27.

Boro are off on their travels after that with games at Mossley on July 31, Curzon Ashton on August 3 and Accrington Stanley on August 11 before the big kick-off in the UniBond League on August 18.

The plans for a £300,000 redevelopment of the dressing room area at Stainton Park are still in abeyanmce, waiting for a decision from the Football Foundation.

Glendon is hoping the plans will be approved and the funding will come through. Boro will have to find over £30,000 themselves, but the Boro manager said: "It would mean we would have the best facilities in the league and no-one could complain then.

"If we don't get it I will be very disappointed."

THERE are still two vacancies on Boro's Wednesday night Community Sixes soccer scheme. Ring 0161-724 8346 for further details.
